Essay # 3 Prompt: Text to Text
By Week # 6, you will have read various reading assignments chosen specifically for you to critically analyze the ways popular culture affects the ways you think, believe, learn, and live. For this essay, you will be asked to critically analyze two reading selections from this pool of authors:
Bryan Stevenson: “Higher Ground”
Harriett MyBryde Johnson: “Unspeakable Conversations
John West: “Excerpts From the Last Goodnights
Charles Duhigg: “The Neurology of Free Will”
You may NOT use Dweck or Cox in this essay. You will need to write an essay with at least 8 paragraphs long using quotations from each reading selection to validate your claims. In other words, one quotation per body paragraph. Follow the format in the notes.
Prompt:
Please write a 7 paragraph essay that addresses the following prompt. Why  do many people feel their beliefs are justifications for their actions? (1)You will have to introduce and summarize each article’s claims and (2) make claims of your own as to how these discussed issues actually relate to beliefs and actions.
Remember, this essay is 3rd person point of view. Therefore, you will not use any 1st or 2nd person point of view pronouns. You will need to integrate  quotations into your essay, one quotation per body paragraph.
Texts:
Please choose 2 reading selections from the list above.
Essay Components:
Your introduction should introduce each article and provide a brief summary discussing its main purpose. Please do not write your essay with the assumption that your audience, me, knows the content described in the reading assignments. In addition, you will need to define any terms that you may use that may not be familiar to an audience whom have not read the articles. Finally, end your essay with a thesis statement that is the answer to the prompt question.
Compose as many body paragraphs as you need to present your claims. Because some of your body paragraphs will provide additional explanations and examples, you will only need to use a quotation from the reading selection to support four major claims within your essay. Therefore, make sure you have an outline identifying when you are explaining a claim or making a claim. Refer to your notes for examples to compose effective paragraph styles.
Furthermore, end your essay with a concluding paragraph that reminds your audience of your essay’s focus. Next, remind the audience of your topic and the authors in your essay. Finally, give the audience a warning about the issued you have discussed in your essay.
DUE DATES:
Final Draft Due:  Sunday, 3/17,  by 11:59 pm. You will need to submit an electronic final draft to Turnitin via Canvas by the due date.
FORMAL REQUIREMENTS
Length: To give me as full and detailed essay as possible, your essay should be a 7 paragraph essay (1 intro paragraph, 5 body paragraphs, and one concluding paragraph). A 7-paragraph essay is too short, thus earning a failing grade. You will need to create a works-cite page for this essay.
You can write more, but it must meet the minimum length.
