Discussion #3
In wake of the protests spreading throughout the United States the past few years it is hard to not draw comparisons to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s-1970s. A comparison does not mean the same, though. There are similarities and differences. So, with that in mind we have a two part discussion:
In your opinion, what is the most effective method for changing society (think African American Civil Rights, Women’s Movement, Hispanic Movement, war protest, etc.)—voting, courts and legal systems, nonviolent civil disobedience, or violent protest? Fully explain your point. Provide some specific examples from actual events in the 1950s, 1960s, or 1970s to support your argument. Then, compare the current protests with police brutality, anti-establishment, gender, identity, etc. with those protests of the previous decades. What similarities and differences do you see? How does your opinion regarding the most effective means of change from the 1950s-1970s correspond to what has happened in the USA over the past few years? There are no right or wrong answers here. There are only arguments and the facts you use to back them up.
You should be using sources in these discussions and you need to cite your information in the initial response. Citation matters! It proves our work.
Good luck and I look forward to reading these responses.
The point breakdown will be:
25 points max for the initial response.
25 points max for the reply.
So, in total, this discussion amounts to 50 points.
Grade breakdown for initial post and reply.
A: 23 – 25 – An excellent response and/or reply. Great insight, very well written, engaging, thought-provoking, and correct citation (if applicable). Posts that score in this range are among the most detailed, informative, and clearly communicated discussions.
B: 20 – 22 – A good response and/or reply. You explained your points, the post was well-written and largely free from errors, there was extra information, and you added to the discussion in a meaningful way. Also, correct citation (if applicable).
C: 18 – 21 – A satisfactory response and/or reply. You completed the assignment to, at least, the minimum standards. Your post was decently written, there may be a few grammatical and syntax errors, but, for the most part, it was proofread and professional. These posts generally do the assignment, but do not add or contribute to the discussion in a meaningful way.
D: 15 – 17 – A poor response and/or reply. You submitted the assignment but it had issues or errors. This could include incomplete posts, irrelevant information, a lack of citation (if applicable), offered little to no contribution, etc.
F: 0 – 14 – A failing response and/or reply. You know why you got this…
