For years, your parents had a traditional FFS health insurance.  They are now required to switch to a managed care product.  They are very upset because they love their physicians.  However, their physicians did tell them they had contracted with certain MCOs to provide services.  Your parents are still confused.
How would you explain the managed care principle, the goals of managed care, and which program would enable them to still use their practitioners?
Section II: PATIENT AND PROVIDER RELATIONSHIP
For each of the 3 topics you select, you are required to write 1 complete, separate paragraph consisting of at least 5 complete sentences each.
Read the article Impact of the Doctor-Patient Relationship.
Refer to Table 2 through Table 5 in the article. Select any 3 topics from these tables and describe a personal experience related to that topic and how it is connected to the patient-provider relationship. Note: if you do not want to share personal details, you may fictionalize all or part of the experience.
Here are a few examples:
In Table 1, you could select the topic, “New Patient: Trust not yet established” and describe a time when trust was or wasn’t built when you were a new patient.
In Table 2, you could select the topic, “Space/Room” and describe a time when a healthcare provider’s office or exam room affected your visit and relationship.
In Table 5, you could select the topic, “Cost” and describe a time when the cost of a healthcare provider’s services may have affected your relationship.
Section III: PATIENT BILL OF RIGHTS
Read the following scenario.
In the early 1980s, Sarah Thompson, a vibrant 30-year-old professional, sought medical attention for a persistent abdominal issue. Dr. Harrison, a prominent surgeon, recommended a complex surgical procedure to address an underlying condition. The discussion around the surgery lacked crucial details, and Sarah wasn’t informed adequately about potential complications or alternative treatments.
The day of the surgery arrived, and Dr. Harrison performed the procedure. However, post-surgery, Sarah faced unexpected complications that significantly prolonged her recovery. She discovered that these complications were not disclosed to her beforehand, leaving her emotionally distressed and struggling to comprehend the unforeseen challenges.
For each of the questions below, you are required to write 1 complete, separate paragraph consisting of at least 5 complete sentences each.
Discuss the absence of informed consent in Sarah’s case before the existence of the Patient Bill of Rights. How did this impact her autonomy and ability to make informed decisions about her healthcare?
The Patient Bill of Rights addresses a patient’s right to receive accurate and easily understood information about their health. How would Sarah’s experience have differed if this right had been in place?
The Patient Bill of Rights emphasizes a patient’s right to make decisions about their healthcare. How would the Patient Bill of Rights empower her to be an active participant in her healthcare decisions?
The Patient Bill of Rights allows patients to voice complaints and concerns regarding their care. How could Sarah have utilized these mechanisms to address the lack of informed consent in her case? For example, what pre-surgery communication strategies/information should have been provided/addressed in her particular case?  Why would those have been important considerations in providing her with the ability to make an informed decision about her surgical procedure?
SECTION IV: BEHAVIOR CHANGE
Compare the key elements of two behavior change theories/models. What are the concepts they have in common, and how do they differ? Also, describe briefly (1-2 sentences) to your classmates who your target audience is and why they are a vulnerable population. What is the role of ethics and impact of health disparities for this population and how does it relate to one or both theories you assessed? Be sure to cite evidence any time you are stating facts and findings.
