You will prepare a research paper for this course based on a topic of your choice
related to health care technology and informatics but cannot repeat what is in the
textbook (it can expand on a topic in the textbook). Think of any type of
technology used in healthcare facilities/hospitals, medical devices, or a type of
technology that has improved healthcare. You cannot write the paper about
electronic and personal health records.
The paper should contain the following elements:
o Title page that is set up as follows:
Title of Paper (unique title- not “Research Paper”)
Author Name
Institution
o Table of contents
o Abstract
o Introduction
o Overview of the technology (e.g., how it works, what it does)
o Key issues: this structure will vary depending on your topic—
pros/cons, policy and legal issues, best practices, outcomes, alternative
treatment methods cost effectiveness, patient care
o Conclusion
o References
o Appendix (if any, not required)
The title page, table of contents, reference pages, and appendices (if any) are
not considered to be a part of the main body of the paper. The length of the
main body of the paper should be a minimum of 5 pages and a maximum of
10 pages, with a minimum of three current (within five years) references. Do
not exceed the page limit. If you do the paper will not be graded and you will
earn a zero. Sources for information include websites, news articles,
conference proceedings, white papers, and journal articles. The textbook may
not be used as one the five required references, but it can be used as a
reference. Wikipedia and About.com are not acceptable sources. The paper
should be in APA format, double-spaced, and word-processed.
