Guidance on
approaching the topic:
a. Review the literature on the Smart City concept.
How is it defined in academic literature? What are its characteristics?
b. Based on relevant theories and frameworks, discuss
whether tourism planning and development could incorporate the principles of
the Smart City concept. In doing so, students need to assess the challenges and
opportunities related to tourism development of a destination, including
tourism impacts, as well as the requirements for tourism planning, in so far
considering tourism infrastructure requirements, requirements of tourism supply
such as tourism accommodation, attractions, auxiliary services, transportation,
requirements by the distribution channel (T/Os and T/As), etc.
c. Students can
find the EE’s action plan on the Smart City concept. After carefully reviewing
the policy requirements, students need to examine the role of tourism
stakeholders in adopting the EE action plan on Smart Cities in a tourism
destination. How are tourism stakeholders affected in the short and in the long
run? Among other aspects, students may want to consider stakeholders’
resistance to change; community involvement and the role of the locals in
adopting the Smart City concept practices for tourism purposes; the
applicability of the Smart City concept for nonurban tourism destinations, the
use of technology in the application of the Smart City concept, etc.
d. On the basis of a., b., and c. above, students are
asked to identify a tourism destination operating as a Smart City. Students
need to present, in no more than 500 words, what are, according to their
opinion, the examples and practices that reflect the Smart City concept in the
destination. In this section, apart from academic literature, students are
welcome to use screenshots, google maps, industry web references, the
destination’s official internet site, etc.
