Week 6 Discussion 1: CBT Case Study Discussion. Reply to Ashley Talkington
1. What cognitive behavioral techniques might be appropriate to use with Alana as she explores her frustration and anger related to stressors?
The cognitive behavioral techniques that I feel Alana would benefit from in exploring her frustration and anger stressors are doing cognitive homework, changing one’s language, and rational emotive imagery. Doing cognitive homework would require Alana to do some work outside of counseling sessions. In order to make this a little simpler, mobile apps enable the patient to document his or her thoughts and feelings as they occur, resulting in increased accuracy of the data (Tang & Kreindler, 2017). Homework has been seen as a natural opportunity for apps to augment the role of therapists. Individualized guidance and feedback on homework is found in many Internet-based or mobile apps that have been shown to be effective in treating conditions such as PTSD, OCD, chronic pain, depression and suicide ideation and situational stress (Tang & Kreindler, 2017). The second technique I would utilize with Alana is changing one’s language. Clients learn that “musts,” “oughts,” and absolute “shoulds” can be replaced by preferences (Corey, 2016). Clients who use language patterns that reflect helplessness and self-condemnation can learn to employ new self-statements, which help them think and behave differently (Corey, 2016). Another technique I would use with Alana is rational emotive imagery. Stress-related disorders originate from irrational beliefs and self-defeating philosophies and attitudes (Onuigbo, 2018). Rational-emotive behavior therapy is an effective therapeutic modality that can be applied by Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) clinicians for the management of stress (Onuigbo, 2018).
2. How would you use cognitive behavioral therapy techniques in a culturally/gender sensitive manner to address Alana feelings about being a woman as a minority in the finance industry? How might the principles from CBT be applied to the case study?
I would use disputing irrational beliefs and changing one’s language in order to help Alana. Depression is a medical condition affecting the way mood is controlled by the brain; it affects the way a person thinks, feels and acts (Rizeanu & Bratu, n.d.). Alana has an opportunity to be successful in this position but with her current thought process she will never reach her full potential. Alana has a low self-esteem and low self-confidence. She had also talked about how she has a lack of pleasure, feels anger, hopelessness, decreased concentration, irritability, fearfulness, and indecisiveness. In order to change their negative emotions, people have the power to choose and the ability to identify, dispute and change fundamental irrational beliefs such as: absolutist beliefs regarding oneself, the people around us and the entire world (Rizeanu & Bratu, n.d.). If Alana were able to stop the negative thought process, it would allow her to have a more positive connection in all aspects of her life. This would improve her relationships with other people, improved satisfaction with her work, and home life.
