For this part of Unit 2, we are focusing more on crafting our argument. We will be writing our introduction section (which follows from the Literature review, Introduction Outline, and Citing Evidence for Claims activities). You will then conduct a detailed self-review of a full draft of your paper (compiling all of the previous drafts into one full paper).
In order to understand how to write this kind of paper- please see relevant resources from the prior modules (Unit 1 for plagiarism, APA style, etc; Unit 2 for introduction outline, literature review, what makes a good discussion, citing evidence for claims, and finding articles using databases). These resources will help you understand how you should be citing evidence in your paper- direct quotes should not be used at all in this paper.
Use the resources that are listed in prior steps in this unit 2 to help you write this section draft.
What sources to use? For the introduction section of this paper, you should be using the background articles as citations to back up your claims with evidence (I expect to see the majority of these sources in your paper). In addition to using these citations, you will also need to find and use at least 6 additional high quality research citations (see the articles chosen for Discussion 2). These should be peer reviewed empirical articles, not blogs, magazine articles, or other non-reputable/non-scientific sources. The introduction outline activity helped you determine which of your sources are best used to support specific claims.
Claims? Start structuring your introduction using the claims in the introduction outline activity. There may be additional claims that you find might strengthen your paper (i.e., connection between stress and anxiety) or other types of claims that you may want to add in. Think about the arguments we are making for our hypotheses- anticipate any counter-arguments that might exist, and think about addressing those in your paper if needed. Review the citing evidence for claims activity to help you understand how frequently you need to provide citations as evidence.
APA formatting? If you want additional help on APA style or formatting, refer to the APA tutorial link from Unit 1, then check out the APA student sample paper found in the folders of the prior steps (introduction outline, etc) and use the template linked in the assignment.
What is our goal here? Remember- we are writing an empirical paper as if we would be submitting it for publication in an academic journal- similar to an article such as Curry and Kasser. This is the background literature portion of the paper and providing the reader with the purpose of our study. This will go before our method section.
