Please watch the video. The issue of beauty changed radically over the
centuries as traditional academic standards were challenged by artists.
Does art need to be beautiful? Is beauty important? Can beauty be
proved? Is beauty objective? Refer directly back to the video. For
example, what did Plato say? How was beauty seen in different cultures?
What is aesthetics? How did Kant, Hegel or Winckelmann differ in their
notions of beauty? Discuss at least FIVE works of art from the periods
we have studied in this class that challenged traditional notions of beauty.
MY 5 topics I chose:
rococo, baroque, realism, impressionism, Romanticism
Make sure to clearly explain why you have chosen these works and how
they fit into the art historical canon. For example, if you are using a
Romantic work you need to define Romanticism. Your response must be a
minimum of 2,500 words. Points will be deducted if your response does
not meet college standards. Please do not use outside sources. Please refer to the material you’ve been
assigned for an artist/art movement. Include images of the works you’ve
chosen at the end of the text. Each image must be properly identified
with: work of art, artist, date. When using outside sources you MUST
include proper citations in MLA format. I will only accept scholarly
sources–no Wikipedia, Encyclopedia, etc. You must include a
bibliography.
