This week we will cover DNA, genes, chromosomes, mitosis, meiosis, and inheritance. For this week’s discussion, find a relevant news article from www.sciencedaily.com (or another similar reliable news source) based on a recent study that broadly or specifically discusses any of these topics for the week to write your discussion post.
Current event discussion posts should include the following:
Post a working link to the article. The article should be ≤5 years old, a news article covering a recent scientific finding (i.e. not an informative article), and from a reputable source.
Summarize the article for your classmates using your own words. Details described should include the topic, the scientific problem and research conducted, and its relationship to the weekly topic (if not obvious).
Next, apply this research. Specifically, describe broader implications of this research that was not previously described in the new article. In other words, how is the overarching topic or findings of the article impacting society, the environment, health, or the world in a positive and/or negative way? Be specific. For maximum credit, big picture impacts should be original (not already discussed in the original news article cited) and should have significant substance (this could mean citing a second article). Should you wish, you can also acknowledge any big picture applications/implications discussed in the article. If you’re linking your article to another news article and discussing how they apply to each other as your big picture discussion, please be sure to cite the other news article.
Post a response to at least two other classmates’ articles for the week. For your response, you should discuss a different or alternative impact or implication of the findings than that described by the original poster. Big picture impacts can have both positive and negative implications, so consider both. Again, the big picture application response should be specific and have enough information that your peer can directly understand the link you are making.
