This week you’ll get some practice with peer review so that you can give your classmates effective, clear, useful feedback on their writing.
For this assignment, you’ll practice formative, rubric-based feedback. In other words, you’ll be using the assignment rubric to provide feedback that helps your peers improve their papers’ final drafts.
You will not be providing summative feedback, side notes, or line-by-line editing.
First, carefully read through the assignment rubric for the Persuasive Research Paper Final Draft. (SEE ATTACHED FILE NAMED: RUBRIC)
Next, carefully read the following Persuasive Research Paper written by a previous learner in English 310 and used with their permission. (SEE ATTACHED FILE NAMED: STUDENT ESSAY FOR PEER REVIEW)
Now, compose a peer review for this learner, in the form of a letter written directly to them, that addresses each of the rubric’s areas in a separate paragraph (APA, Mechanics, Structure and Organization, Introduction and Conclusion, Body, & Formatting).
Here are some guidelines and tips:
Mix criticism and praise.
Use the “describe, evaluate, suggest” framework detailed in this week’s OWL: Giving Feedback for Peer ReviewLinks to an external site. reading.
Whenever possible, provide examples by citing specific areas of your peer’s paper, i.e. “page 2, paragraph 3.”
Here’s an example of what one paragraph of your peer review could look like:
“In terms of structure and organization, I noticed that your paper is still a couple pages short of the required length. I wondered if adding more detail to your rebuttal section would help you generate a little more material. That section felt shorter than some of the others. I also noticed that the transition from the first and second full paragraphs on page 3 seemed abrupt. I didn’t quite see how those two topics connected to one another, and I thought it might be helpful to add more transition material there to make the connection.”
Your letter should be 300-500 words in length and provide substantive, useful feedback to the writer.
