Introduction to Behavioral Ethics
Traditional philosophical approaches to studying ethics focus on learning philosophical theories such as utilitarianism and principle based ethics, which we can use to use to determine the “right” (ethical) course of action. A large part of this class has focused on learning and applying those philosophical theories to determine what is “right.” However, western philosophy has acknowledged a real discontinuity between judging some act as right and following through and doing the right thing.
Why do so many people end up acting unethically in situations where they are very clear on the difference between ethical and unethical behavior? For example, why do students cheat on tests when they know they should not do so? Why do businesspeople behave unethically when they know they should not? The study of this phenomenon is called “Behavioral Ethics.”
Behavioral ethics is a relatively new area of study drawing on research from fields such as behavioral psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, and evolutionary biology. Its findings show that people are often influenced, subconsciously, by psychological biases, organizational and social pressures, and situational factors that can lead to unethical action.
The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to gain insights into how you (personally) can improve your ability to behave ethically, even if you are facing organizational and situational factors which make it more difficult for you to “act” on your ethical principles.
