Be sure to pursue your topic well by providing supporting materials/evidence. Tie material together in the conclusion of the paper. Here you can offer personal reflection on the issue as well.
I expect you to read and cite from at least 4-or more different sources,
– One of which must be academic (peer reviewed articles or scholarly books or chapters from edited books) and
-At least 2 reliable (see me if questioning) sources from the internet.
I expect that you will also be able to touch on articles or chapters from the websites taskforce.org and hrc.org as we use in class or chapters from class.

WRITING THE ESSAY:

PAPER FORMAT.
Your essay should be about 5-7 pages double-spaced, typed, normal font (12 point) and normal margins (1 inch all the way around).

CITING TEXT.
I expect you to cite reading material and class discussion material (where helpful) in your essay. Limit your quotations –that is— please do not quote excessively. I would rather hear from you and see you citing ideas than quoting text. Typically we quote when the way an author says something is clearly superior or gets right to the point.
3. FORMAT (General format strategy)

b. describe the problem/issue/situation. Who is affected and how?
c. discuss different perspectives—why is the situation as it is?
d. critique and discuss which perspective best describes/explains the issue//
Is change necessary/ possible/ welcomed/happening? How do we know?
e. conclude with a brief summary and any solution or area for future research/direction

EXPECTATIONS AND GRADING OF WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT
My expectations for this assignment–include–
– Displaying comprehension and command of the subject matter, the reading material and ideas.
– Demonstrating ability to integrate the material into a coherent summary/synthesis.
– Demonstrating critical thinking in pursuing a theme or argument/s.
– And finally, demonstrating the ability to write a coherent, logical paper.
GRADING
Scores will be based on your individual performance in relation to an established standard. Grading will be based on the following criteria, with pluses or minuses where appropriate.
“A” Excellent work. Systematic, clear, and logical organization and writing; demonstrated command of the materials; serious treatment and comprehension of subject and ideas presented; thorough analysis with ideas logically connected and support provided (i.e. drawing from the literature); originality in thinking.
“B” Good Work. Demonstration of understanding of material and capacity to reflect on it; some analysis, and some support provided, and not simply a systemic summary; ideas linked to the literature.
“C” Satisfactory work. Summary of literature but with little or no critical reflection or interpretation; Satisfactory comprehension and presentation of written material, demonstration of some grasp of material, but not of a capacity to work with it in depth.
“D” Below satisfactory work. Weak grasp of material; ideas not organized; no clear analysis; sloppy writing.
“F” Unacceptable. No indication at all of having addressed the questions or course material.
Late Papers will receive a 5% deduction for each day late.
