Argument Outline (Aristotelean)
Introduction: (1 – 2 paragraphs).
Begin with a statement that describes the topic and the argument about the topic. Why is there an argument about this topic? This should be your first 1 or 2 sentences. 1 or 2 sentences.
Add any background information or context a reader would need to better understand the topic and argument. 1 or 2 sentences.
Provide a thesis statement that includes your stance and your main reasons for your stance. You should have 2 or 3 clear reasons for your stance. The reasons that you list will determine the content of your argument essay. 1 sentence.
Supporting your thesis: (1 – 2 paragraphs).
Beginning with your least significant reason, provide support through explanation, statistics, expert opinions, evidence, etc. 1 paragraph.
For your next most significant reason, provide support through explanation, statistics, expert opinions, evidence, etc. 1 paragraph.
For your most significant reason, provide support through explanation, statistics, expert opinions, evidence, etc. 1 paragraph.
Addressing an opposing viewpoint: (1 – 2 paragraph).
Explain the reasoning for the opposing viewpoint. Why do people believe this? What do they argue? Do they have a specific claim? What evidence do they use? 1 -2 sentences.
Acknowledge strengths and point out weaknesses in the opposing argument. Refute their points with counterpoints and evidence against their viewpoint. 1 – 2 sentences.
Reinforce your viewpoint as being more reasonable. 1 – 2 sentences.
Concluding: (1 paragraph)
Restate your position (thesis) referencing your strongest evidence and your main rebuttal of the opposing position.
End with a strong sentence that suggests some specific action be taken or that encourages your reader to think more about the topic.
