Search in these databases to find academic journal articles (peer-reviewed) and academic books (often university published) that help answer your research question.
Your topic needs to be on the art of Africa for this assignment. Your research question can be about symbolism or artifacts related to a particular cultural tradition, like that of Egypt, Aksum, or the Yoruba. Try to stick to the premodern era, but it is OK if some of the artworks end up being from more recent times. There is a tendency in African art historiography to treat art of the 1800s and early 1900s as representative of earlier art that may not survive.
I would suggest focusing on symbolism or a certain type of art discussed in the material, like sculpture, paintings, or architecture. Using the websites on the CSU library page listed above, find 10 academic sources (you will mostly find articles or scholarly books) related to your question. Read the abstract (summary) of the article (most will have one of these at the start). Skim through the source to see if it is helpful.
When you find your 10, create a list in MLA or Chicago style format. Type your research question on the top of the list.
Write a short summary (2-3 sentences) underneath each citation of what the article says about your particular question (you don’t have to summarize the whole article–just write what it says that helps answer your question). Since we are starting with a research question, you should annotate with a focus on the question. Grammarly and other sites don’t say this. I am emphasizing this because I want you to focus on a research question rather than just reading about a general topic. In other words, just make sure your summary talks about the information relevant to your question (you don’t have to summarize everything about the article).
