Week 2: Exploring Policy Lenses
No unread replies. No replies.
GUIDELINES: This week’s lecture and readings provided some tools that build a foundation for examining and critically thinking about public policies, specifically health policies.
To encourage you to think as a “policy person,” your assignment for this week focuses on understanding policy lenses.
Choose one lens that you would like to explore. Your choice can be based on something that resonated with you – for example, if you are a religious person, you may feel comfortable with the religious lens- or one that you did not find relevant or useful at all – for example, if you are NOT religious, that lens may provide a sense of frustration for you.
Next, using Covid-19 as your health policy, find an article that presents/analyzes/explains a facet of this policy through your lens.
SOURCES: To provide some guidance, you may use one of the following sources for your article:
Access World News (For Star Ledger articles) kff.org (Kaiser Family Foundation)
ncsl.org (National Conference State Leg.) Brookings Institute
Pew Research New York Times
CQ Researcher Washington Post
Politico The Commonwealth Fund
The American Enterprise Institute American Public Health Association
Note these are NOT links.
In a post of no more than 3 paragraphs due Friday 6/11 @ 2 pm:
Briefly summarize your article.
Why did you choose this article and this lens?
What specifically is the health policy regarding Covid-19 expressed in your article of choice?
What did you find instructive about policy lenses and how did it help further your understanding of health policy?
In grading these assignments, I am looking for APPROPRIATE use of class terms, original ideas, critical thinking and SPECIFIC examples. Generalities and vague comments are discouraged. If you make an assertion, I expect that you will support it with a specific example.
Make sure you use paragraphs and proper grammar. Please include a citation and link to your article.
THEN, in 1 paragraphs, respond to a classmate’s post due 6/14 @ 2pm.
The same requirements apply as apply to the first section, namely,:

In your commentary, make sure you use critical thinking. Simply saying “That is interesting” or “I agree with what you said” will result in point deductions.
