Overview:
You are to observe and/or interview a child or adult in the age range of interest to you (only after securing permission from the adult or the parent of the child) a minimum of three times during the semester. Each observational period should last at least 45-minutes and you are to have enough information gathered so that you include (at the minimum) two separate examples from each developmental area. The case study should be written and turned in as per the due date listed below. The case study should include a brief description of the person observed and then focus on describing the cognitive-languge, social-emotional, and physical-motor development of the person, using the concepts and terms learned in this course—and using APA style when citing your sources. The three listed areas, above (cognitive-language, social-emotional, and physical-motor development) should serve as headings for your APA-styled paper. The “body” of the paper (excluding title, abstract, and reference pages) should be approximately 5 – 7 pages in length.
Each observation you decide to include in your paper must have corroborating research or theory that explains why you saw what you saw. This “research support” will be cited in APA-style. So, observation 1 must have research support for it; observation 2 must have research support for it, etc. If your paper has simply a general description of each area of development (Physical/Motor Development for instance) and then two documented observations, that is not the assignment. Please follow the instructions and do well.
IMPORTANT: For the three (3) designated developmental areas, above, you are able to be a little creative. For example, for the area of Physical-Motor Development, you are able to observe/describe 2 examples of physical development (only), 2 examples of motor development (only), or 1 example of physical development AND 1 example of motor development. You are able to do this in the other two areas of development, as well. Questions about this? Please ask!
