Human Trafficking: The Research PaperRubric
Prof. Bordogna
Your research paper on Human Trafficking requires you to prepare a 5-7 page
report with documented sources (using MLA Format – The Modern Language
Association Style with in-text, parenthetical citations and a Works Cited page).
Your task is to investigate human trafficking in one specific country of
the world by using the latest published sources.
Follow these steps:
On the Bergen Home Page, click on the Sidney Silverman Library.
Next, click on Research Guides on the right.
Under Subject, scroll down to Writing and click. You will see WRT101 Bordogna Human
Trafficking. Click and watch the first video with Dr. Roscello, following her directions
carefully. She will suggest an outline for your paper.
Select a country from the list provided in the Trafficking in Persons Report, latest
edition, published by the Department of State of the U.S. Gov’t. It is likely that every
country has a form of human trafficking (sexual, forced labor, child trafficking, body
parts, etc.) After you select your country, read about it in The Trafficking in Persons
Report.
You need to use six sources in the paper, one of which is the Trafficking in
Persons Report. The sources that you use should be no older than five years from
today’s date. Since circumstances change, the most recent information is the best.
Organizational Outline: Your paper should follow this outline format:
Identification of the country and its Tier Trafficking
Profile: The types of trafficking that is occurring.
Prosecution: Steps the Country is taking to prosecute criminals.
Protection: What the Country is doing to protect its citizens and residents.
Prevention: What the Country is doing to prevent the growth of trafficking.
Recommendations: These are your recommendations to reduce trafficking based upon your research.
A Perspective from the United Nations:
Trafficking in persons is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights.
Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in
their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by
trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit, or destination for victims.
Elements of Human Trafficking :
On the basis of the definition given in the Trafficking in Persons Protocol, it is
evident that trafficking in persons has three constituent elements:
The Act (What is done) Recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or
receipt of person.
The Means (How it is done) Threat or use of force, coercion, abduction, fraud,
deception, abuse of power or vulnerability, or giving payments or benefits to a person in
control of the victim.
The Purpose (Why it is done):
For the purpose of exploitation, including the exploitation of the prostitution of others
or sexual exploitation, forced labor, slavery or similar practices, and the removal of
organs. As a reminder, your Research Paper on Human Trafficking in a Specific Country is due. The paper should have 5-7 pages of text and a one page Works Cited. The paper should not have a a fancy title page. The opening page should look like a regular essay. Your name as the author should appear on every page in the upper right-hand corner. Each page should have a 1″ margin on all sides. The paper should have in-text parenthetical citations in every paragraph that has material to be cited. Photos or charts, if used, should appear on an appendix page before the Works Cited page. The paper is worth 25 points or 25% of your total grade.
