This question has three parts. Label your responses, Parts A.B. and C.  Our disc

April 6, 2024

This question has three parts. Label your responses, Parts A.B. and C.  Our discussion for Part C combines new learning from both chapters!
Part A.  Choose a research type described in either Ch. 12 or Ch. 17 that piques your interest. (This discussion will be enhanced with students choosing different types; please exclude health services and outcomes research). Briefly describe the type. What advantage(s) do you see in utilizing this research type? How might this research type advance nursing science and healthcare improvement?
Part B.  One particular type of research, Health Services and Outcomes research, is described in Ch. 12. Donabedian (1987!) is credited with developing the Structure(S)- Processes(P)-Outcomes(O) framework (p. 199). Refer to the S-P-O descriptions in the chapter. Importantly, Nurse Sensitive Indicators have been developed over the years demonstrating how patient outcomes can improve with greater quantity or quality of nursing care. Much progress has been made in acute care nursing; other nursing specialties and disciplines are similarly developing sensitive indicators for quality and health care improvement.  From your session folder,  choose one Quality Indicator from either the Ambulatory Care Nursing or Spiritual Care (interdisciplinary) tables. Identify the Indicator you have chosen AND indicate if it represents a Structure or Process or Outcome criteria.  Then share why you think this Indicator is important to study and what impact further research studies may have on nursing quality, patient outcomes, or healthcare improvement.
Part C. First, read “Developing nurse-sensitive outcomes in acute inpatient mental health settings-A systematic review” by Ngune et al. (2023).
Refer to Figure 1: Flow diagram of search results and study selection. What do you most notice about the Identification, Screening and Inclusion criteria?
Read over the 4.9 section: Specific Outcomes and Nurse Variables. Choose one of the outcomes (4.9., 4.10, 4.11, 4.12, 4.13, or 4.14) for your focus.  Ngune et al. (2023) conclude by indicating that “more work is needed to establish high-quality studies to clearly demonstrate the relationship between these outcome measures and changes in nurse variables, such as nurse staffing, skill mix, work environment, nurse education and nurse experience (p. 6254).  Propose a research question to address your chosen outcome and its relationship to one of these nurse variables.
Finally, end your post by posing a thoughtful question to your peers from your reflections in either Part A, B, or C.    (no need to write any references, just your citations from your text and research article 😊)
