Topic: Alcohol Use Disorders in the United States
Introduction
`           Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs) account
for 5.1% of the global disease burden making it the seventh leading cause of
death globally (Glantz et al., 2021). The epidemiology of AUDs encompasses
several causes including environmental, social, and psychological factors.
Environmental factors include access and availability of alcohol, family
environment, and cultural norms (Chartier et al., 2017). Alcohol is an integral
aspect of different cultures influencing issues like the age of onset for
drinking and perception within diverse cultures. Moreover, increased social
acceptability in different societies especially among the middle class
contributes to rising alcohol consumption across the globe.
Conversely,
the psychological factors associated with the disorders include exposure to
stress and trauma exacerbates the risk of developing the disorder.
Particularly, the use of alcohol as a coping mechanism increases individuals’
vulnerability to it. Moreover, low self-esteem and confidence might contribute
to the misuse of alcohol. Similarly, the comorbidity between the disorder and
mental health disorders like major depressive and anxiety disorders might lead
to the adoption of alcohol use as a coping mechanism (Sureshkumar et al.,2017).
The consumption exposes the individual to addiction.
Likewise,
social factors like lack of cohesive social support and socioeconomic status influence
the development of AUD. What is more, life events such as personal losses, and rapid
transitions intensify alcohol use. These multiple causes provide the basis for analyzing
the epidemiological data and its impact on conclusions and recommendations. Also,
the data expounds on risk characteristics across different demographics and
locations in the United States.
