Servant leadership is built around the idea that a leader’s priority is to put the needs of their subordinates before their own or those of the organization. As John Harbaugh, coach of the Baltimore Ravens, puts, a servant leader does whatever they can to help others be their best to see where it takes us. According to Larry C. Spears, there are ten pillars of servant leadership characteristics: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and building community (Shonk, 2024). Companies that practice servant leadership, emphasizing these key traits, typically meet the criteria of openness and fairness, camaraderie/friendliness, opportunities, pride in work and company, pay/benefits, and security (Sendjaya et al., 2002). Alternatively, Authentic Leadership is characterized by leaders who have high standards of integrity, take responsibility for their actions, and make decisions based on principle rather than short term success (Gavin, 2019). Key characteristics of authentic leaders include: commitment to bettering themselves, cultivation of self-awareness, discipline, mission drive, and inspiring faith. Authentic leadership and servant leadership are each commendable in their own right, but the focus of each style differs. Servant leaders are first and foremost concerned about the personal growth and development of their subordinates. Though authentic leaders also aim to serve those they lead, they tend to place greater emphasis on personal authenticity. This is not to suggest that authentic leaders are self-centered or egotistical; rather, they aim to continuously serve in accordance with their core values and genuine selves.
Resiliency is an crucial component of strong leadership. Resiliency enables leaders to effectively navigate moral and ethical challenges with integrity and determination. For a leader to be resilient, they must first have a strong sense of what their moral compass is and lean on this during times of trials and tribulations. The very essence of authentic leadership is self-awareness and integrity, both of which are important to be resilient leaders. Resilient leaders must know themselves well in order to manage challenges consciously and effectively. For servant leadership, where the goal is to put the needs of other before their own, leaders focus their efforts on meeting the psychological needs and health of their followers and therefore impact subordinate resilience (Eliot, 2020).

Good morning, all,
As continue to explore leadership theories and studies, servant leadership and authentic leadership stand out for their shared focus on addressing ethical challenges, even while they differ on avenue of effort. Servant leadership, pioneered by Robert K. Greenleaf, prioritizes serving followers’ needs, emphasizing empathy and humility. Authentic leadership, introduced by Bill George, centers on leaders being genuine, transparent, and aligned with their vision.
While both theories share similarities, such as ethical conduct and a focus on follower well-being, they differ in focus. Servant leadership focuses on serving others, while authentic leadership emphasizes personal authenticity and integrity (Mayer et al., 2016).
These theories contribute significantly to leaders’ resilience in moral and ethical dilemmas. Resilience, crucial for effective leadership, is nurtured by both approaches. Servant leaders foster strong relationships, supporting followers through trust and collaboration (Luthans, 2002). Authentic leaders, through transparency and adherence to their values, inspire trust and guide teams effectively (Avolio et al., 2004).
When I was finishing this post, I realized that servant and authentic leadership both provide worthy understandings into navigating ethical challenges for any aspiring leader. Because of the similarities discussed above, I do not think there is one clear theory that holds entire advantage over the other in deciding a style, and then anyone in a position of leadership will be well served by being able to adapt between the two. I believe that by incorporating these theories, leaders nurture resilience within themselves and then into their teams by proxemics. Leaders who are successful in this, foster environments conducive to ethical decision-making and organizational success.

Resilience is a crucial factor that contributes to the success of both authentic and servant leadership styles. Leaders who possess resilience are better equipped to stay true to their values and principles in the face of challenging situations and maintain their integrity even when faced with adversity. They are also more adept at adapting to changing circumstances without compromising their sense of self. Leaders with resilience are also better able to model positive coping strategies and maintain a positive outlook, which can inspire and motivate their followers. Resilience helps leaders to sustain their approach over time, foster a positive organizational culture, and effectively lead through change and adversity. It enhances their emotional intelligence, enabling them to connect with their followers on a deeper level, navigate interpersonal challenges, and remain committed to their leadership principles.
The benefits of resilience are particularly important in both authentic and servant leadership styles as they require leaders to remain committed to their core values and objectives, foster strong relationships with their followers, and navigate the inevitable challenges of leadership with grace and effectiveness. In essence, the ability to remain resilient is a critical ingredient for successful leadership in any setting. Leaders who possess resilience can inspire their followers to overcome adversity, remain motivated in the face of change, and work together to achieve shared goals. Ultimately, the benefits of resilience extend beyond the leader to the team or organization, creating a more cohesive, productive, and motivated group. By prioritizing resilience, leaders can work to foster a positive and supportive organizational culture that enables everyone to thrive and succeed.
