Personal Food Culture Essay
Writing Assignment Guidelines
NUTR 325 Food & Culture
120 points possible; See Course Calendar for due date
Writing clearly and concisely is a necessary and valuable skill. To continue to develop and
improve writing skills, students are required to submit an essay answering a question on one of
the topics related to their personal food culture described below.
Essays must be a minimum of 3 pages, not including name or title and should be submitted in
12-point, Times New Roman font, double-spaced, using 1” margins. The essay must include a
title, an introduction (containing a clear thesis statement/topic sentence), body paragraphs and
a conclusion.
Writing assignments must be turned in by 11:59 pm on the assigned due date – please see
course calendar. For example, if your paper is due on April 5, then it must be submitted to Web
Campus on April 5 by 11:59 pm. At 12:00 am on April 6, your paper is late. If your writing
assignment is turned in late, 50% of the assigned point value will be deducted from your total
earned points. Writing assignments submitted before the due date are welcome. Your essay
will be submitted as a pdf attachment via the Web Campus assignment link.
Essays will also be run through Turnitin on Web Campus, which is a plagiarism screening tool. It
identifies essays that have been plagiarized from papers submitted in previous semesters
and/or internet sources. You will not be able to view your report and make changes to your
paper once it is submitted. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and any student found plagiarizing
will be subject to disciplinary action, per UNR Academic Standards Policy.
Your writing assignment should focus on ONE of the following topics:
1. How does your religion affect your views of food and eating? Identify and discuss three
ways in which eating, food sharing or nutrition and health are a part of the faith. Are
there ways in which your religion influences how you see over- or under-eating? What
dietary restrictions, if any, do you comply with? How has this shaped your own current
views and behaviors when it comes to food?
2. Describe your cultural identity and how it relates to your personal food culture. Discuss
three ways in which your cultural identity influences how you eat and make food
choices. What is your race? What is your ethnicity? Where is your family originally
from? How has your cultural identity impacted your current food choices and habits?
3. If religion, race or ethnicity haven’t significantly influenced your personal food culture,
then, culturally, what has? Why do you eat the way you do? Why do you make the
food choices you do? What are the cultural contributors to your current eating
patterns? What has shaped your views and behaviors when it comes to food?
Note: all writing assignments will be run through Turnitin on Web Campus, which is a plagiarism and AI screening tool. It identifies student writing that has been plagiarized from papers submitted in previous semesters and/or internet sources and AI internet source. You will not be able to view your report and make changes to your paper once it is submitted. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and any student found plagiarizing will be subject to disciplinary action per UNR Academic Standards Policy.
