Teens are in a vulnerable state of life, they are trapped between childhood and adulthood. For many, this is the time when they begin to make their own meal choices. Peer socialization is very important in this stage of life and eating with friends is a key component of developing adult socialization. As a nurse completing a nutritional assessment and providing education to teens is important to their growth and development. Adolescents are rapidly growing, and with this comes an increased need to consume enough calories, but the right nutrients are very important. Eating a diet of chips, snack foods an d caffeinated beverages call lead to malnourishment, obesity, impaired immune function as well as not achieving the bone density that they should have for this stage of life. Their bodies are producing an increased amount of blood cells, bone is strengthening and growing, and hormone production is increased (Grodner et al., 2023). Adolescents need to consume plenty of calcium, vitamin D and B vitamins, especially folate for girls after the start of menses.
Question for anyone: What foods do you think teens should avoid? Please justify your answer.
