Vaughn
Meet The Client
Vaughn is a 23-year-old Native American man of the Sioux tribe. He is a respected member and is eager to work on improving conditions on a reservation not far from Riverbend City. He is single. He attended a community college and holds an associate’s degree.
Diverse Populations
Vaughn begins his session describing an issue that happened to him at his last job. While attending community college, he worked as a server in a restaurant near campus. When the restaurant hired a new manager, the manager directed Vaughn to get a haircut. He wore his hair in the traditional style of his tribe. In order to keep his job, Vaughn cut his hair. As Vaughn reflected on his experience, he expressed disappointment in himself for being so agreeable to the manager’s demands. He also shared anger about his manager’s demands. As Vaughn continued to share, he described the challenge of the lack of jobs on the reservation, but that the jobs off the reservation do not understand his culture.

Vaughn expresses feeling like he is just “floating through life.” He has held a number of part-time jobs since he was a teenager. Currently, he is working two part-time jobs, but feels the urgency to locate full-time employment to receive benefits. Vaughn reiterates his desire to improve the quality of life for the members of his tribe. When pressed, Vaughn cannot describe what his desire looks like in action. Vaughn admits that he feels some anxiety when thinking about the future because he does not want to make the wrong choice.
Strategy and Intervention
Vaughn explains his struggle with a decision regarding whether or not to continue seeking his bachelor’s degree. This could potentially open more opportunities for employment on the reservation. However, he will have to move several hours away to attend a university. Vaughn explains that he is the youngest person to be elected as a tribal council representative, and the move would make it difficult for him to fulfill his leadership responsibilities. He further explains that this leadership role brings him joy and he represents the third generation of his family to serve as tribal council representative.
Conclusion
Vaughn described running into a friend from one of his community college courses. His friend was taking courses from an online university for her bachelor’s degree. Vaughn completed some research independently and identified several universities of interest to him. He has applied for a full-time position at the school on the reservation as a paraprofessional. While Vaughn is not certain he wants to obtain a degree in education, he is excited to have regular work hours and health insurance.
