Assignment details
For this assignment, you will submit a media diary consisting of four entries and a summary. The aim of this assignment is for you to engage regularly and critically with different forms of news media. You will need to identify and analyse four news stories that exemplify the media law topics we are covering in this unit.
Regular engagement with the news will help you complete this diary more effectively. Try not to leave it until the last minute so that you can engage well with news sources from across the globe.
This assignment supports unit learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Use the following steps to help you get started on this assignment.
Step 1: Story selection (already done)
Select four news stories that exemplify any of our unit topics. The news stories you choose should be diverse, with no more than one story pertaining to a single unit topic and no repetition of stories.
Start monitoring news from a variety of sources both locally and globally. You may choose any newspapers, online news sites, TV, radio, social media, etc. for your sources. It is your responsibility to ensure these are reliable and reputable sources. Do not use any source more than once.
Each media diary submission must include:
must include at least one international news story
must include at least one story from a newspaper (or its website)
may only include one story from each of the unit’s topics (so not two stories on defamation or two stories on parliamentary privilege)
may include no more than one story that has been provided to you as part of the readings in this unit
may not have been published before 1 January 2023
must not use a single news source more than once (i.e. two stories from The Herald Sun).
Step 2: Diary entries/analysis (you need to do everything from this point on)
Each story you choose should be accompanied by a 300-word reflection/analysis that clearly explains how it exemplifies one of the unit’s topics. It is not enough to merely state the relevant topic; ensure you identify the specific aspects of the story that demonstrate or relate to the chosen topic, including any relevant legislation.
Be sure to reflect on the story and provide your own insights or interpretation. This may include your reaction, any questions the story raised for you with regards to media and the law, or, perhaps, how it made you think differently about the media law topic. This section is particularly important because it demonstrates your ability to think critically about what you are reading and to connect it to broader issues we are covering in this unit.
Think also about the broader implications of the news story. Consider questions such as, what does this story tell us about the state of this topic in the world? How might it influence public opinion or policy? What are the potential future implications?
Step 3: Documentation
Be sure to include the following details for each story you have chosen (these details are not included in your word count):
Story title
Publication date
Story source (i.e. name of the media organisation who has published/produced it)
Relevant media law topic
A link to the story or a full screenshot of the article (if behind a paywall, for example), or a link to video or audio files
Step 4: Summary
Provide a 300-word overall reflection of what you have learned by analysing your four media pieces.
Step 5: Referencing and submission
If you have completed Step 3 and included the key details of each news article, you will not need to provide a reference list. However, if you are referencing a theory or something additional to the news articles, please use AGLC4 referencing.
Submit your diary as a single Word document with your name written in both the document and the file name.
