EN 102: Annotated Bibliography (A.B.) – 100 Points
One of the course requirements for EN 102 includes an annotated bibliography which consists of sources that you have read and plan to use for your major research essay this semester. The annotated bibliography will demonstrate your scholarly and thoughtful reading throughout this semester.
Requirements:
For each source, create an APA-style or MLA-style citation (you choose, but stick with one format for the entire assignment.)
7 required sources annotated, minimum
Write a brief (100-150 word) descriptive and evaluative paragraph of each source. For each annotation you will include (in your own words):
The purpose of the source (to provide new data, review old data, provide historical context, lay out an opinion, or some other).
A summary of the contents (see Chapter 2 in They Say, I Say – use your own words, no quotations.)
The source’s audience (as indicated by language and evidence used)
Its relevance to your research (did it provide background information, anecdotal evidence, statistics, perspective from one side of a debate, etc.)
Alphabetize your annotated bibliography sources
DO NOT use personal pronouns (I/me/my/you)
Be consistent in your format for all the annotations
Avoid any unintentional plagiarism by using quotations for direct quotes
Information Cycle Reflection: After reviewing Info Cycle (see tab in Bb), reflect on your research process to see if there are any gaps in your research.
Are all of my sources in one or two areas of the cycle (hours/days/weeks/months/years/or decades after the start of the trend), and if so, what else could I look for to diversify my source types?
Are there big gaps in the cycle I could try to fill in to get more perspectives on the issue? What voices, views, moments, or source types am I missing?
Grading:
The final AB is submitted with a reflection and is worth 100 points (completed AB worth 70 points, reflection worth 30 points).
Each entry (source plus annotations) is worth 10 points. For full credit, each source needs an accurate citation and annotation.
Points are deducted for incomplete annotations and inaccurate citations.
Points are deducted for not meeting the required number of sources. (For example, an AB with just 6 sources will only receive 90 total points maximum.)
