Data and Information Management Project:
Overview:
This project is designed to assess your understanding and application of the concepts learned in the Data and Information Management course. You are tasked with identifying a business case or problem statement that requires the development of an IT application, detailing its functional requirements, and designing the supporting database system.
Project Requirements:
Business Case Selection:
Identify a real-world business problem that can be solved through an IT application.
Describe the problem clearly and justify why it is significant to the chosen business or sector.
Functional Requirements:
List and describe the functional requirements of the software application intended to solve the chosen problem.
Explain how each requirement contributes to solving the problem.
Database Design:
Develop a Conceptual Model using tools like ER diagrams to represent the high-level data requirements.
Create a Logical Model that translates the conceptual model into a more structured form, suitable for implementation in a database system.
Finalize a Physical Design that includes specific database technologies, indexes, storage options, etc.
Ensure your designs incorporate key design principles, including normalization, table-level constraints, referential integrity, and the use of primary keys, foreign keys, candidate keys, and composite keys.
Database Implementation:
Build the database according to your physical design using an appropriate DBMS (Database Management System).
Include all tables, views, stored procedures, and functions as specified in your design.
Load approximately 50 records into each table to serve as sample data. You can use SQL statements, Excel imports, or web applications for data entry.
Submission Guidelines:
Project Title and Problem Statement: Submit by April 10th. Include a clear project title and a detailed description of the chosen business problem.
Division of Work (for group projects): When submitting your project title and problem statement, also include a document outlining the division of work among group members.
Final Submission: Due by May 7th. Your final submission should include:
A comprehensive report detailing the business case, functional requirements, and database design (conceptual, logical, and physical models). Include pictorial representations where applicable.
A digital copy of the implemented database, including all scripts for table creation, data insertion, and any additional functionalities (views, stored procedures, functions).
A document or spreadsheet with sample data records, if applicable.
For group projects, a finalized document detailing each member’s contributions.
Evaluation Criteria:
Your project will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Relevance and clarity of the business problem selected.
Completeness and practicality of functional requirements.
Depth and adherence to best practices in database design (conceptual, logical, and physical models).
Correctness and complexity of the database implementation, including the use of SQL.
Quality of the documentation, including clarity, organization, and the ability to convey complex information effectively.
For group projects, equitable distribution of work and collaboration effectiveness.
Additional Notes:
Please ensure that all submissions are made in digital format, preferably PDF for documents and SQL script files for database scripts.
Consultation sessions will be available; schedule and details will be provided separately. Please take advantage of these sessions to ask questions or seek clarifications.
Good luck, and we look forward to seeing your innovative solutions and designs!
