Nurse Administrator
Nurse administrators are trained registered nurses who take collaborative, managerial, and leadership roles. They work with hospital administrators, including the facility’s CEO, to make decisions affecting staffing, scheduling, and other organizational aspects of nursing. They are responsible for hiring, budgeting, and scheduling nurses in a health care facility. They also facilitate communication with physicians and high- ranking executives to ensure the nurses’ voices are heard. (ANA, 2023). The qualifications are solid background of clinical experience and well-developed sense that helps them see the bottom line, enforce policies, and represent nursing staff effectively to the rest of the organization. Education and certification are important requirements a well. Personally, I was lucky enough to have three certifications which are CCRN, PCCN and CVRN. It was all hard work and different kind of nervous. I wanted to have all those certifications because I believe that I should always continue learning and be up to date to all the latest trends, also it increases the knowledge, skills, abilities as nurse and plus for being a nursing administrator. The nurse administrator should be able to fixed issues that is attainable within a certain time frame and as mentioned, to be always up to date on the latest trends through advance education, seminars and conference. The standards of nursing administration are:
Accountability and advocacy for employees
Clinical care delivery and optimal patient outcomes
Healthy work environments
Legal and regulatory compliance
Networking, partnering and collaborating
Patient and population health advocacy
Safety, quality and risk management
Strategic, financial and human resource management

Greetings everyone. We are halfway! This week’s discussion has us reflecting on the qualifications, skills, and education of a nurse manager. Just last week I was preparing and reviewing my resume both in anticipation of graduating this year from our MSN program and as a much-needed refresh. The process had me wondering what the type of skills employers are look for in a nurse manager? Here is what I have found: Successful managers have critical thinking skills, are empathetic, can participate in and mitigate conflict resolution easily, and are often superb communicators. The eleven years under my belt as a nurse with charge nurse and clinical nurse III experience has allowed for me to practice all of these skills. Nurse managers may hold an MSN or an MHA (Master of Healthcare Administration). Certifications in leadership or healthcare management are particularly helpful to these leaders.
Currently there is a newly opened nurse manager position in our office and while I have been preparing for this role there is some natural hesitation and genuine concern that maybe I am not suited for this position. Here are some of the listing requirements from the job posting:
Minimum five (5) years of RN experience either in a hospital or clinic setting
Must have managerial experience and mentoring of junior team members
Proven leader with a track record of providing extraordinary patient care and customer service
Excellent communication and writing skills
Independence and autonomy, when necessary, as well as the ability to work seamlessly as part of a team
Flexibility and willingness to occasionally work after hours or on weekends, if necessary
Advanced computer literacy, primarily with Apple products (we are a fully iOS/Mac environment) and a diverse knowledge of EMR/EHRs (we currently use Elation for our EHR as it is compatible with Apple products)
I am trying to lean on my CN III and Charge Nurse experience for managerial experience, but it feels like a stretch! I am interested to know more if how some of you have obtained managerial experience without holding a manger titled position. Like I said I am working on comprising a suitable resume to apply for this position. I also think the interview experience would be valuable to go through the motions and build confidence.
