Anth 206: Forensic Anthropology Spring 2024 – Critical Essay #2
Theme: Depictions of Forensics in Entertainment
Due Date: Sunday, April 28th, 2024 by 11:59pm
Introduction___________________________________________________________________
As we continue to examine the various ways that forensic science gathers, examines, and makes
conclusions about evidence, we are constantly drawing contrasts between actual forensic science and
the way it is depicted in the media. Depictions of forensics in television, movies, books, and other
forms of entertainment are fraught with inaccuracies. For this critical essay assignment, students will
apply their budding forensic knowledge and critical thinking skills to evaluate the depiction of
forensic anthropology and forensic science in general within entertainment.
The Assignment: _____________________________________________________________
1) Choose an entertainment work of fiction:
Select a television show, movie, video game, book, or graphic novel, which depicts any aspect of
forensic science. Although there are many television programs that are more heavily dedicated to
forensic investigation, you are not limited to these. You are welcome to choose from any of these or
expand your choice as you wish. The only requirement is that it is a fictional program and not a
documentary or dramatic recreation. The chosen work should contain at least three detailed
depictions of forensic investigation, analysis or methods.
2) Examine depictions of forensics in this work:
Examine and take notes on the depictions of forensics in the work you have chosen. Select 3
depictions of forensics from your chosen work to form the basis of your critical essay. You may
select depictions of themes that we have examined in class already, or those that we have yet to
cover. The depictions that you do choose will form the themes of analysis for your critical essay.
3) Critical Analysis of forensics in this work:
Following the guidelines below, evaluate each theme of analysis you have chosen in your critical
essay. For each case, apply what we have learned in class to evaluate the depiction of forensic
investigation chosen. You should compare various aspects of what is depicted to what you learned.
Ask yourselves the same questions we would ask in class. For example;
-How does what is depicted compare to what we have learned about forensics?
-Who is conducting a forensic investigation, and what are their qualifications?
-How is evidence being handled and processed?
-What conclusions are being made using forensic evidence and how accurate are they?
This critical analysis, contrasting the depiction of each theme and how it compares with your own
developing forensic expertise from class, will form the basis of this essay. Use specific examples
from the course material when doing so. In your conclusion, you will then objectively evaluate the
depiction of forensic science in this work based on the analysis you have completed.
Guidelines: ___________________________________________________________________
1. Format: Your essay should be a minimum of 3-4 pages in length, double spaced, and be written
in a 12pt Roman font with standard, uniform margins throughout. You may expand your essay’s
length but it should not exceed 6 pages. If you include figures or images, they do not count toward
the total length.
2. Structure: Your essay should be well organized and have a brief introduction, body, and
conclusion.
a. Introduction: In your introduction (1-2 Paragraphs) you should introduce the work that
you chose. You may reference the name of the movie or episode number, title, of the work, but
provide a full citation at the end of your essay so that I can find it if I need to. This section should
introduce the chosen work and your analysis.
b. Body: In your body (6-8 Paragraphs) you will describe your chosen themes and present
your critical analysis for each one. I suggest at least two paragraphs for each discussion, although
some may be shorter or longer than others.
c. Conclusion: In your conclusion, summarize the results of your analysis and present your
evaluation of the work of entertainment you have chosen based on its depiction of forensics.
3. Due Date & Logistics: Your essays are due on Canvas by Midnight, Sunday, April 28th Your
essays will be graded the following week with comments and evaluation rubric uploaded to
blackboard. This assignment, is the second of two essays as outlined in the syllabus, and each will
make up 10% of your grade.
