you will be asked to read a novel NOT written by a Canadian author, and in on the theme of identity or social justice. You will then write a 7-paragraph formal literary analysis of a theme of the novel. This is NOT a book report or a book review and MUST have a well-considered thesis statement in the introductory paragraph. Your essay should be about 2 typed pages, double-spaced, 12 pt font. Choose the theme you wish to explore, one that can be found in real life.
Think of 3 ways you can prove (main points) that this is a theme of the novel.
Look for some examples from the novel that will back up these 3 proofs and write down the page numbers
Write an outline of your essay, including the 3 main points with examples from the book for each. Be sure to indicate what the topic of each paragraph will be. Remember that this is a 7-paragraph essay and needs to strictly follow the Formal Essay.

Write a formal thesis statement which states the theme the 3 main points you will explore. You must ensure that your phrasing/form of words in your thesis statement are parallel.
Write your introductory paragraph, carefully. following the Formal Essay Model Blueprint handout guidelines.
Write the essay so that each topic covered fits with the thesis statement AND is in the order given in the thesis statement.

o Does your conclusion summarize your main points?
o In your conclusion do you only include what you have already shown/covered in the body paragraphs?
o Do you clearly emphasize what you have proven (your theme)?
o Do you have a strong final sentence (Clincher) that leaves the reader with something to think about?
o Have you proof-read your paper for typing errors?
o Have you read the paper aloud to catch any issues with sentence structure, word choice, use of capitals etc.?
