Gender Action Project C
Overview of the Gender Action Project:
The Action Project is an
opportunity for you to devise a meaningful solution for reducing gender
inequality. You will identify a specific problem, design a solution for it, and
create a slide presentation.
The Action Plan should
incorporate theories and evidence from the class and may involve additional
research. Your chosen intervention can be as big (a law?) or small (a workshop
on campus?) as you like. While you are not required to implement the action
plan, you are required to design a plan that is feasible.
Here is the assignments:
Part A Submit the gender-based
issue you plan to address with your action plan.
Part B Research the gender-based
issue you selected, identify possible interventions with which you might
address it through your action plan.
Part C The slideshow presentation
featuring your intervention.
Directions
for Part A:
Contemplate what you intend to
focus your project on, then complete the table below.
Examples of gender issues
include, but are not limited to: sexual violence, domestic violence, wage
inequality, parental leave, police violence, employment discrimination,
reproductive rights, forced sterilization, gender stereotypes, unequal
distribution of domestic labor, transgender rights, LGBT rights,
intersectional gender issues, gender inequality in various social
institutions (education, health, law enforcement, social welfare), biased
media portrayals, underrepresentation of women in politics
Which gender issue will your project address? Please
provide a back-up issue that would be second choice for you.
The gender issue I plan to
address in my action plan is police violence against women, particularly
Black women, and other women of color. My backup issue would be employment
discrimination against women.
Why have you selected this issue?
I have chosen to focus on police
violence because it is a major gender justice issue that disproportionately
impacts marginalized women.
Directions
for Part B:
Research and respond to the
prompts in this assignment. Utilize newspaper articles, academic journal
articles, and data from sources such as the census, pew research, and
other research institutes.

Sources: Newspapers
.org, .gov websites
This should be written in paper
format. Please use headers to separate responses to each of the questions
below. Your paper for this assignment should be 4 double-spaced pages in
length and include at least 6 references.
Use APA format and include a
reference page. Resource for ASA: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/asa_style/
Prompts:
Identify the social issues or
problem.
Describe what
it is.
Use statistics
and sources to present how widespread this problem is, how many people it
impacts and how.
How does this
problem manifest specifically in your state, county, or city?
Determine which groups are
impacted by the social issue and briefly explain how they are impacted. These are likely multiple groups, so mention
each one and how they are impacted (ie: women, children, people of
color, LGBTQ, immigrant, low-income individuals/families, people with
disabilities, older adults, etc.)
What are the
causes of this gender inequality issue? Who benefits from this
inequality?
Describe at least two previous
and/or current attempts, strategies, and/or policies to address or solve
the issue or problem. What types of
programs or policies exist to address this issue? Which organizations,
programs, or policies address this issue in your state, county, or city?
Why is it important to intervene
to address this issue? What is at stake if the issue continues?
What are two interventions that
you propose to address this issue? Rank the interventions in order of
interest (1 being the one you’re most interested in and 2 the next, etc).
Potential interventions include: a policy change, starting an
organization, creating a community education campaign, presenting a
workshop, hosting a public meeting, offering a service to the community,
building a class-action lawsuit, establishing an advocacy campaign, etc.
Directions
for Part C:
Slides due Canvas in the form of
a slide presentation.
Plan an intervention to address
your action plan. Then, create a slide presentation that profiles your
gender-based social issue and details the intervention you have planned.
The presentation will draw upon and build upon work in Parts A and B. You
will not actually present the slides so make sure that the slides have
enough information without you speaking along with them.
Prompts for slide
presentation:
What is the gender-based issue
you have chosen for this project? Why did you select this issue?
Profile the issue by addressing
the prompts in Part B of this project.
Detail your intervention. Be
specific. Utilize the “Planning an
Intervention Worksheet.” You must address at least 10 of the questions in the worksheet in
your presentation.
Why is your intervention likely
to be effective at addressing this issue?
Emphasize why it is important to
intervene. For this section, make an appeal to the members of the class to
join in your efforts to address this issue. Consider making a request of
the class to show support for the intervention (like to participate, donate,
etc.)
