You will simulate coin flips using the random-number generator in Google Sheets.

April 4, 2024

You will simulate coin flips using the random-number generator in Google Sheets. (Simulations are often used to estimate probabilities.) You will answer questions based on this simulation.
Work to Include PART I (Spreadsheet)
Create a spreadsheet workbook in Google Sheets.
Name this workbook ‘ – MATH-131-01 Project 2’.
Rename the existing (first) tab of your spreadsheet workbook ’Coin Flip – Heads’.
Use this first tab to simulate 1000 trials of flipping a coin 10 times, counting the number of times heads occurs during each trial (each set of 10 flips).
Notes for the procedure:
Insert one row so that this tab has 1001 rows (since Google Sheets defaults to 1000 rows). Place column headers in the first row. Freeze the first row.
In Columns A through J, use =RANDBETWEEN(0,1) to have it be randomly determined whether a coin lands on heads (1) or tails (0).
In Column K, use the COUNTIF function for each trial to determine the number of times the coin lands on heads within the trial. [For thought or discussion but not written response: Why would the SUM function accomplish the same thing?]
In Column L, use the ‘Paste special/Paste values only’ menu command after completing the simulation to capture values that do not change every time the spreadsheet is updated.
In Columns N (for the labels) and O (for the results), use the AVERAGE, STDEVP, and COUNTIF functions to include information that will help you answer the questions that are outlined below.
Suggestion: use the cells N7 through N17 and O7 through 017 to label and record frequencies for each possible number of heads. In cell O19, type “=sum(O7:O17)” to make sure that you’ve accounted for all 1000 trials.
Create a second tab in your spreadsheet workbook. Name this tab ‘Histogram’.
Insert into this second tab a histogram that displays your simulation results. Some notes for the procedure:
The data range and series should be L2:L1001 of the ‘Coin-Flip – Heads’ sheet.
The bucket size should be 1.
The horizontal axis should have a minimum of -0.5 and a maximum of 10.5.
PART II (Write-Up)
Name a Google Doc or Word document ‘ – MATH-131-01 Project 2’. Type a line at the top with this format:
– MATH-131-01 Project 2 Write-Up, Winter 2024
Then do the following beneath that. Use complete sentences with proper spelling, capitalization, usage, etc. (Do not actually type “Paragraph 1” and the like. Do not label your paragraphs at all. Simply type the paragraphs described.)
Paragraph 1
State the mean number of heads for your 1000 trials.
State the standard deviation for the number of heads in your 1000 trials. Report the result to two decimal places.
State the largest number of landings on heads via your simulation in any one trial (one set of ten flips). Does this surprise you? Why or why not?
We’d predict that a fair coin would land on heads 50% of the time. State the expected number of heads in ten flips of a coin—the predicted mean. (Show the work in calculating the predicted mean.) State how close your mean is to the predicted mean.
