CYC Perspectives
& Practice
Integrating
CYC theory and practice, students will first discuss one (1) CYC
perspective that guides their practice, informed by previous and
concurrent course materials, with examples of practice scenarios from
practicum that demonstrate the connection/intersection between theory and
practice. Students will focus their reflections through a relational
lens.
2 CYC Perspectives:  (Please choose 1)
1. Relational
Praxis:
Relational Praxis Child and youth care
involves co-creating and “being in” therapeutic relationships with children, and their families, primarily in their life space and milieu (Garfat & Fulcher,
2011). Caring therapeutic relationships are the core of child and youth care.
They include the promotion of growth-promoting relationships with self, and
between young people and the people in their support system. The relationship
is continually attended to and nurtured to empower strength and resiliency and
bring about growth and healing. CYC relationships are open, responsive, and
co-constructed, allowing for depth and safety. CYC relationships are also
intentional (goal-directed) and based on the needs of the child/youth/family
and community. These relationships facilitate attachment (Maier, 1993) and
belonging (Brendtro, Brokenleg & Van Bockern,2002).
Relational practice is grounded in
understanding of attachment and the implications of less than ideal early life
experiences that may have influenced attachments of the young people (Siegel
& Hartzell, 2003; Baylin & Hughes, 2016). CYC practitioners know that
relationships take time, and they must meet and accept people where they are at
and “hang out” with them in their environments or life space to facilitate the
trust, safety and depth of connection that can provide a context for growth and
change (Garfat & Fulcher, 2011). CYC relationships also demonstrate
patience and an ability to hang in with young people and their families when
they are struggling and behaving in ways that are challenging. A relational
perspective assumes that behaviour is purposeful and an attempt to meet needs,
whether personal, social, or survival
2. Strengths-Based
Child and youth care focuses on strengths, social competence, and resilience rather than pathology.
This perspective is linked to a developmental perspective, as the focus is on moving forward to build
on the child/youth/family’s strengths and assets, to develop new competencies in development. Child
and youth care practitioners believe that children, youth and their families are doing the best that
they can at any given time and assist the child or family in working towards the “next step” by building
on existing strengths, abilities and resources (Anglin, 2001). CYC practitioners work to see past
challenging behaviour, looking for the young person’s resiliency and attempts to meet their needs in
adverse conditions and experiences. This approach includes but moves beyond understanding and
developing internal strengths, to focus on external strengths in the ecological environment, such as
family, community, or neighbourhood (Unger, 2015).
