Advanced generalist social workers understand that assessment is an ongoing component of social work practice’s dynamic and interactive process. Advanced social workers incorporate and apply their understanding of theories and interprofessional conceptual frameworks. They critically evaluate and apply this knowledge in culturally responsive assessment with clients and constituencies, including individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Assessment involves a collaborative process of defining presenting challenges and identifying strengths with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities to develop a culturally responsive, mutually agreed-upon plan. Advanced generalist social workers utilize inter-professional collaboration, as necessary, to enhance and inform the assessment process. Advanced generalist social workers are self-reflective and continuously self-monitor to understand and minimize how bias, power, privilege, and personal values and experiences may affect their assessment and decision making. Advanced generalist social workers:
use a variety of culturally responsive theoretical frameworks and evidence-based approaches to collect, organize, and interpret information from clients, collateral contacts, and constituencies;
apply theoretically sound and evidence-based approaches in the analysis of assessment data from clients, collateral contacts, and constituencies;
demonstrate respect for self-determination while developing mutually agreed-on, realistic, and measurable intervention goals and objectives based on information obtained through assessment; and
select appropriate, theoretically sound, evidence-based, culturally appropriate intervention strategies based on the assessment, research knowledge, and values and preferences of clients and constituencies.
Students will use scholarly materials (DSM5 TR, texts, and journal articles) to identify appropriate assessment methods. Students will use these assessment methods to collect client data from their chosen case study. Students will apply culturally responsive theoretical frameworks by identifying culturally affirming practices, acknowledging clients’ intersectional identities and evidence-based approaches to analyze the assessment data. Students will develop mutually agreed upon, measurable intervention goals and objectives and identify culturally appropriate intervention strategies based on their analysis of the assessment data.
Students will locate a case study from either Chapter 9 (Dissociated Disorders), Chapter 10 (Somatic Symptom Related Disorders), Chapter 13 ( Sexual Dysfunctions), Chapter 14 (Gender Dysphoria), or Chapter 16 (Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders) in The Clinical Assessment Workbook  [*hint: none of the cases have a diagnosis that starts with “Other Specified…” or “Unspecified…”] and address all of the content areas below using the bold words as first level headings.
Submission requires a scholarly level of writing that includes cited research to back up assertions, especially with regard to potential treatment modalities. Submissions should be at least (and not exceed) 8-10 pages not including title and resource pages. Scholarly writing in the School of Social Work requires the accurate use of APA 7th Edition style. *An abstract is not required for this assignment.
