PART I: INTRODUCTION
Make sure the proposal starts on a general level with some type of introductory remarks before going into the details of the specific research question you are proposing. This can be accomplished by providing a frame of reference, a definition, or a discussion of the significance of the topic.
Provide a statement of the question, issue or general problem that you are examining. A common problem in research proposals is for the author to delay too long in stating the specific research question. Make sure the research question is stated no later than the second or third sentence. Make sure the research question is fully stated in one place.
Discuss what other studies have said about your research topic and how your interest relates to that of other scholars who have written on the topic.
PART II: STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Explain what you hope your research will find or show. State your objective or series of objectives. Now that you have conducted research on a viable topic, you should be able to answer your objectives(s) in one or two sentences; the answer may become the thesis of the final paper.
PART III: BACKGROUND
Explain your interest in and experience with this topic. Describe any previous research you have conducted on this or related topics, any classes you have taken on this or related topics, or any reading you have already done on the topic. If you have personal experience that has lead you to want to do more research, describe that here too.
PART IV: SIGNIFICANCE
Explain why this research topic is worth considering, or this research question is worth answering. Answer the following questions for guidance:
What do you hope to learn from the scholarly conversation about your research topic?
What will this conversation add to your understanding about the topic?
What new perspectives do you hope to learn from?
What use might your final research paper have for advancing knowledge about this topic?
Who would benefit from your findings once the final project is complete?

Recommendations
The quality of the writing in this research proposal is important. Check for the following common errors:
Are the sentences too long? You can improve your writing immensely by using shorter sentences.
Are the paragraphs too long? This is a common problem that makes it harder to read a paper.
Is any of the writing awkward, vague, long-winded, or too informal? The best writing is concise, to the point, and without a superfluous word.
Avoid inadvertent plagiarism: have you cited your sources each time you express an idea that is not you own?
Have you utilized APA formatting style for citing articles or books?
Is your paper replete with grammar, punctuation, or syntax errors?
