Scenario: You are a member of your school’s leadership team. In a team meeting, your principal shares that an issue has been identified that needs to be addressed at the school. Recently, your school’s inclusion policies for LGBTQ+ students are being questioned. The principal has asked you to write a memo explaining the importance of creating inclusive school and classroom environments for students. The principal has also asked you to research and find an article to share with the staff at the next meeting.
Task: Review the 2021 GLSEN School Climate Snapshot for Georgia. Examine the data. In Galileo, find a journal article about school policies that create inclusive environments for LGBTQ+ students. The journal should be published after 2000 and be peer reviewed/scholarly. When searching for your article in Galileo, think about adding key words to help you find good articles. I would add words like: public schools and inclusion. Also think about specific aspects of school that are impacted by LGBTQ+ policies: library, P.E./gym, sports, extracurricular activities, discipline policies, bullying. Use these key works to find good articles that address inclusiveness with LGBTQ+ students. For example, think about the library and banned books with LGBTQ+ topics and/or authors.
Based on the findings of the Snapshot for Georgia and the journal article, create a memo for your school’s leadership team. Use the template provided. Post your memo and journal article to the discussion board.
