Perception is part of cognition, and the process of perception provides information that will be used later for higher-order cognitive processes. That information is stored in our memory for subsequent use in higher-order cognitive processes such as reasoning and decision-making. Information must be properly perceived, interpreted, and processed using various cognitive processes so that it can be used at a later time.
For this assignment, you will write a scholarly paper that discusses the role of information processing in display design and decision-making. Choose a display as an example and discuss how the information on that display helps or hinders correct decision-making in operational situations. Your display can be aviation related but does not have to be, and the display you choose must be different than the one you chose for your discussion topic in this module. Every display regardless of application conveys information from the system to the user so that the user can decide if further input is necessary.
You are selecting a display or system and discussing how perception impacts data processing and information transfer. But the paper is more than just that. It should be an analysis of a display based on what information is presented by the display. Does this information provide what is necessary to allow proper decisions to be made? Does the information need to be modified to improve human perception of the situation at hand? Can it be designed better? What needs to be changed in order to enhance information transfer for better decision-making? What processes are involved in the perception of the information on the display? How does the information collected from the display transfer to the decision-making that needs to be done in order to make the best decision possible under all circumstances? These are just a few things that are important to focus on in your paper. No display is perfect, and all displays can be improved in some way.
You have two weeks to work on this problem. Take the time available, begin working on this today, and research the topic appropriately.
This paper is assigned in Module 2 and will be due in Module 3. Your paper should be a maximum of 10 pages in length and should be written in APA format (double spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman, as well as other APA recommended format specifications). The 10 page limit should be the body of your text and should not include the title page, abstract, or reference section.
