For this writing assignment you will first need to go to the link below and complete an IAT (Implicit Association Test). As we talk about in class, the IAT is designed to measure your implicit attitudes or associations that participants might not be aware of themselves.
https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/education.htmlLinks to an external site.
After reading about the IAT, please click on “Take a Test” at the top of the screen. You will then be directed to a short consent form. After reading the consent form, click on “I wish to proceed” at the bottom of the page.
You will be shown a list of possible IATs. I strongly recommend that you take the Race IAT. However, if you do not feel comfortable taking that one (or don’t feel comfortable showing me your results) then choose a different one. Either way, complete the full IAT. Keep in mind that this task will take some time (~10 minutes) and you should take it when you are not near things/people that may distract you as this could affect your results. Once you get to the end of the IAT task the website will provide you with your results. Please copy/paste (or screenshot) the results page. You must submit this page in order to receive full credit for this assignment! I will be the only one who sees your results and I will not judge you on your results (I have seen all patterns of results, nothing will surprise me).
Then I would like you to reflect on the following questions.
Do you believe your results are accurate? Why or why not? If you don’t believe your results are accurate, if there was even a grain of truth in your results, what would it mean?
What was your reaction when you learned your results?
If the test showed that you have an automatic White preference (for example), does this mean you’re racist? If it showed that you have no preference, does that mean you’re not?
Let’s assume that your IAT results are accurate. Why do you think you have this implicit bias? Think about what we have talked about regarding prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination, and apply those concepts here.
Once again, assuming your IAT results are accurate, what could you do in the future to decrease any implicit biases you may have?
Regardless of which option you choose, your writing assignment should be between 3-4 pages long, double spaced, 1 inch margins, and 12 pt Times New Roman font. This will need to be submitted as either a Microsoft Word file (.doc, .docx) or as a PDF.
This Writing Assignment will be due on Wednesday, April 3rd @ 11:59 pm. Remember, you need to complete 3 out of 4 writing assignments for this class.
