This is a website and is about the statistics of the crime rates over the last month. In January 2024, New York City saw less crime compared to the same time last year in 2023. Less people were hurt or involved in serious crimes like murder or theft. There were also fewer illegal guns found. But, there was a small rise in robberies and stealing without breaking in. Also, hate crimes, especially against Jewish people, went up a bit.It is a government website.
This article is credible because it was taken by the NYPD and straight from their records and posted by the government and approved by them. It is a .Gov website.
I think i will use this article in my paper because I am looking at the crime rates and what makes it go up and the gang related violence and you can see the statistics and go off of that.
Hochul, K. (2023, November 9). Governor Hochul details the first comprehensive overview of crime trends across New York State for 2023. Governor Kathy Hochul. https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-details-first-comprehensive-overview-crime-trends-across-new-york-state-2023
This is a government website and has been officially posted by them. This is a government announcement by Governor Hochul about New York’s crime in 2023. It shows crime trends and talks about efforts to make places safer with smart plans and working together with people. It’s like saying, “Here’s how we’re trying to reduce crime and make everyone feel safer.”
This info is trusted because it’s from a government site, meaning it’s checked and official. It shows what the government thinks and plans about stopping crime.
I could use this by using facts to prove that gang violence is a major issue in New York city.
Lopez, E., & Boxerman, B. (2024, January). Crime trends in U.S. cities: Year-end 2023 update. Council on Criminal Justice. https://counciloncj.org/year-end-2023-crime-trends/
This is a report from a group that studies crime, focusing on what happened with crime in different US cities by the end of 2023. It looks at how crime rates changed to better understand crime across the whole country. The main point is to use this crime data to help make better safety rules and policies.
This report is trustworthy because it’s made by the Council on Criminal Justice, a group known for carefully studying and understanding crime issues. They use strong and careful methods to collect and look at crime data.
I’m going to use this report to back up my points in my paper, showing that we need to use real data to make better laws about stopping crime.
Fox 5 New York. (2023,April). Street soldiers: The new gang culture. Fox 5 New York. https://www.fox5ny.com/news/street-soldiers-the-new-gang-culture
This ia a news article about more young people joining gangs in New York, making gang violence a bigger problem. It talks about how this affects the city.
Because the article is from Fox 5 New York, a well-known news channel, it’s a good source for info about what’s happening in New York City. There was research done and using statistics to prove these facts.
I could use this article to help show how gang violence with younger people involved is changing crime in New York City. It can make my paper stronger by giving real examples of how gangs affect the city’s crime rates.
U.S. Department of Justice, National Drug Intelligence Center. (Year). Title of the report. Retrieved from https://www.justice.gov/archive/ndic/pubs23/23502/crime.htm
This is a Government website that is credible.
This website is a guide/ statistics of all of the crime in new york and if it has increased or decreased.
I will use this as factual evidence to argue if gangs cause more violence in the crime rates in New York.
USE THIS WHAT I ALREADY HAVE FIRST
New York City is highly relevant with the wide range of cities that have had to deal with the horrible problem of gang-associated violence and that the rising crime rates cannot be stopped. Gangs, which previously were in power ranking and in control, have entered a new phase. They are now people without borders, so to speak, with acts of violence increasing and becoming unpredictable and ever more violent As a result of these new formed and motivated gangs that experience a range of different forces, they have brought a significant drive of Crime City’s landscape, and proving a grave challenge for the police officers and the policymakers in general.
The NYPD and the news article paint a grim picture of the evolving gang landscape in New York City. Different from organized and hierarchical gangs of the past, contemporary gangs are typified by inflexible structure, imperiling the traditional rules, lack of respect, and extreme violence (NYPD, 2024). This new breed of gangs has become nothing but senseless; the bloodthirsty goons engage in “shoot on sight” tactics, demolishing other groups, and are unconcerned with accidental casualties; there are many helpless bystanders who have gone through the crossfire. The fear of being identified as a victim of a gang-related crime, being influenced by social media and drill music that glorify and promote gang violence, and the quest of the individual to belong and dominate the community have further caused the escalating threat (NYPD, 2024). What is more, these platforms serve as environments for the return of rivalry, making the situation even worse, which gives rise to a massive increase in shootings, homicides, and other kinds of offensive criminal acts that are directly connected with gang activity.
One of the most concerning aspects of the modern gang culture in New York City is the active recruitment of younger members, some as young as teenagers. The gangs have been very skillful in manifesting the flaws of deprived youth and overcoming isolation through gangs’ suitable structure and organization (NYPD, 2024). It is remarkably experienced in communities where individuals in the lower class lack an environment of engagement and association. The cycle that creates this kind of violence is propagated; thus, even a small number of potential offenders can grow to create a pipeline that keeps law enforcement busy, and curricula that prevent crimes are rendered ineffective.
The impact of gang violence on New York City’s crime rates is substantial and far-reaching, as evidenced by different laws in New York. Killings, shootings, and aggravated assaults have all gone up, while more than half of the impact seems to be caused by gang-related issues (Fox 5 New York, 2023). Moreover, green criminals like robberies, carjacking, and drug crimes have also had consequences of the same with the presence of gangs as they fight and contest for territorial control and control of these illicit markets. Similarly, gang violence has become a haunting and pervasive phenomenon that demands a cost reminiscent of security and quality of life. Community members in gang-controlled areas exist in constant dread, effectively promoting the fracturing of communal associations and the not doing of witness cooperation with police forces (Lopez & Boxerman, 2024). Essentially, what the particular situation creates is that it fosters the growth of an environment that is suitable for the rise of other misdeeds; thus, it amounts to a vicious circle that has been confirmed to be difficult to dislodge.
This article sheds light on the intricate link between gang violence and the drug trade in the New York/New Jersey region. MS-13, Latin Kings, and other street gangs, which control retail-level drug distribution, are at the origin of much of the peacemaking violence regarding territories and areas of drug distribution (U.S. Department of Justice et al., 2024). Besides this, the report pinpoints an all-time high gang membership, the young age of the recruits, and clashes between the gangs, all amplifying the issue of drugs and violence.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, law enforcement agencies in New York City have implemented various strategies to combat gang violence. These include injunctions targeted at reducing the presence of violent offenders, enhanced cooperation with regional and national partners, and the introduction of community-based prevention programs focused on educating the young ones to avoid joining gang groups (Hochul, 2023). All sides, in the form of law enforcement as well as community participants, shall come together to forge a holistic solution. Confronting factors that fester gang misconduct, like poverty, absence of education, economic opportunities, and social isolation, are the main factors that are very important for breaking the chain of violence (NYPD, 2024). Through the funding of proven prevention and intervention programs, and the development of stronger community and police working partnerships, the City can represent the example of firm will when it comes to troubleshooting gang violence.
