If you are uncomfortable with submitting a voice thread you
can provide a presentation script for each slide.
Description and Guidelines:
You will
put together a slide presentation that will be audio-narrated using
VoiceThread.
Minimum
20-minute presentation
In
VoiceThread you should please record each slide individually. Stop recording at
the end of each slide and start a new recording when you start a new slide.
Topic selection:
Begin by choosing an FDA approved prescription drug. The drug does not have to be one we covered in the course/textbook. It also does not have to treat a specific disorder/condition that was covered in the course. For example, you can choose a prescription drug that is used for lowering blood pressure, cancer, eye inflammation, etc. You can choose any prescription and condition of interest to you.
The main purpose of the presentation is to learn
more details about the class of drugs that prescription belongs to, its
mechanism of action, why it causes specific side effects, Secondly, you’ll
learn more about the condition/disorder/disease of your choice in much more
depth. At times, it is hard to keep up with the newest data and all the
fascinating new developments. This presentation gives you the opportunity to
dive deeper into the world of pharmaceuticals at a much more detailed level and
to learn about the most current updates to our knowledge base on your topic of
choice.
Your prescription drug of choice does not
actually need to be in the textbook. When I say ‘deeper than the textbook’ I
mean that a general textbook is not going to be very detailed and very specific
on 1 sub-topic incorporating novel published literature and discoveries.
Within your chosen topic, the goal is to show
critical thinking, rather than simply listing information.
Format to follow for presentation:
Title Slide – Topic & Author
Why did you choose this specific drug and what
it is used for?
Drug – What class of drug does this belong to?
What is the mechanism of action? Graphical visualization highly recommended
(Minimum 2 slides, can have more)
Condition – Background & Significance:
Epidemiology/prevalence, neuropathology, symptoms, characteristics, and
deficits of this condition. (Minimum 4 slides, can have more)
Explain how the mechanism of action of the drug
treats this condition.
Explain how the mechanism of action of the drug
leads to side effects.
Conclusion: Essentially what does all this say and what does it mean. Discuss the strengths and weakness of the chosen drug as well as an overall conclusion on the efficacy and effectiveness of this drug in treating the condition. (2 slides)
