For this assignment (an essay of about 1000 words, or seven – nine paragraphs) imagine the (fictional) Book of Wisdom and Knowledge has been stolen from your university’s library by an unknown person or group of people.
Your faculty and classmates have chosen you to find this item and restore it to your community. Since no true hero works alone, you want to select four others to accompany you on this quest. You choose your companions from characters found in the three epics we have read so far this semester: The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Ramayana, and The Odyssey. You may include main characters, but you don’t have to.
Your aim in the essay is to clearly identify the four characters that compose the rest of your team and explain why each one was selected. Be sure to use organizing elements like topic sentences and transitions, and support your arguments with evidence from the texts (including at least one well-integrated and correctly cited quotation for each). Consider each character’s strengths and weaknesses, individually and as a member of the team.
REQUIREMENTS
Write an essay of seven to nine paragraphs presenting your argument. Include quotations from the texts as well as additional details that illustrate and enhance the points you are making; you might want to review the Announcement regarding Generalizations vs. Concrete Language.
OUTLINE
Your first paragraph should be an engaging introduction with a clear thesis.
Use standard elements like topic sentences and transitions to move through your analysis, and pay attention to structure and organization. You might, for example, choose to organize the essay by focusing on one character at a time, or alternately, focus on one virtue or trait at a time.
Provide specific examples and quotes, well-integrated and correctly cited, from the texts included in this course. **If you use any materials not in the course, whether primary or secondary texts they must be cited (in-text and in the Works Cited section). A significant and well-chosen quotation must be included for each of the characters.
The last paragraph should be a conclusion. Why, specifically, do you think this team will be able to successfully achieve its goal?
Your final page should be your Works Cited page, in MLA format. It should include the three literary texts (our epics), as well as any content pages from the course material to which you may have referred, and any outside sources used (if any).
