Both Augustine and Rousseau explicitly take pride in their intelligence; both also see this
pride as a problem. Do the two authors see this pride as a problem for the same reasons?
Does either overcome it successfully?
Your paper should begin by stating the question or problem you are addressing and why
it is important. You should also indicate the way in which you are going to address the
problem or question and state your general thesis or contention about it.
5. You should then proceed to lead the reader step by step through an argument about what
Augustine and Rousseau are contending as well as what you have concluded from their
arguments and why.
6. You should also support your claims about what they are arguing with quotations or
citations to specific passages in the text. (The latter take less space. The first time you
cite a text, insert a footnote in which you state that citations are from author [first name,
last name]; title of the book; publication information [city: publisher, date]. After that,
you can simply refer to the text by putting the author’s last name, date of the publication,
and page # in parentheses—in the text of your paper to support a point you have just
made or at the end of a quotation from the text.)
7. Think about whether someone might object to what you are claiming. If so, you should
recognize possible objections and respond to them—with both arguments and textual
citations to back up your claims.
