TOPIC: “Why do people root for the underdog?”
“20 AI Questions”
Form: In this assignment, the goal is to use Chat GPT and DALLE2 as creative brainstorming partners. You will co-create a dialogue with free AI text app Chat GPTLinks to an external site.. Your goal is to treat the AI like a human counterpart and see if you can “trick” it into revealing its hidden humanity.
First — you will engage the Chat GPTLinks to an external site. AI in conversation about a topic or question. Think of approximately 20 questions to ask it. You may choose any topic, OR use one of the following prompts:
Love Hurts. Why?
I’m Melting. The Psychology of Global Warming
The Meaning of Life
Which is better? Soup or stew?
What makes a great dancer?
Fish is delicious but the oceans are empty.
The definition of a poem
Why do people root for the underdog? – THIS TOPIC IS CHOSEN
Next – you will edit the original Chat GPT conversation, tweaking and refining it to your liking — looking for ways to create a nice “arc” with a beginning, middle, and end. Consider criteria such as pacing, subtext, and voice.
Then — you will use Open AI’s DALLE-e 2Links to an external site. or crAIyonLinks to an external site. (free) to create 3 accompanying images for your “20 AI questions” dialogue.
DELIVERABLES FOR OPTION 3:
1- Your original draft dialogue created with Chat GPT (before editing — we want to see what prompts you used!), THIS IS NOT PART OF YOUR WORD COUNT.
2- Your edited, refined conversation, so we can see the improvements and changes you made. (pacing, subtext, voice) Aim for @1000 words.
3- Your 3 AI-generated images. (cite the prompts you used for these too!)
Remember: Your ultimate goal here is to treat AI like a human being and use it creatively — as a jumping-off place to explore your chosen topic. You may be as impertinent or tricky with your questions as you like. Feel free to load them with innuendo, double entendre, or subversive intentions. Take an experimental approach. If you can introduce subtext — and have that play against the literal-minded AI, this may create interesting results!
Grading: You will be marked on the originality of your prompts and line of questions (innovation), the overall “flow” of your dialogue (craft, pacing, subtext), how well you express yourself as you engage with the AI (voice, characterization), and your selection of images (curation).
This assignment will ask you to create a dialogue between two individuals.
1 – The speaker — the person who is asking the questions.
2 – The AI — who answers the questions, and who the speaker will treat as though they have a pre-existing relationship with.
(eg: mother, sister, long lost friend, dog, God… your choice!)
AI is only as interesting as the questions you ask it. So start to think about some profound questions. The kind you stay up late talking to a friend about.
You will want to imbue the AI in your piece with certain characteristics. You are creating a character. Give it a name. Who is this AI to the voice who is asking the questions?
Consider how you will convey an implied backstory into your line of questioning. What is the story “between the lines” that you — as the author — can impart? The AI will respond factually, earnestly, and within its limitations. The more specific you can be about the desired style and content of your response — the more interesting the answers you will get.
AFTER your initial AI-generated dialogue is complete — the REAL WORK begins. Now your challenge is to take the spirit of this AI dialogue and use it as a jumping-off place for a scene that YOU write yourself. See how creative you can be with it. You will add pacing, characterization, context — whatever you need to make an interesting scene. THAT is your main task. The AI exercise is simply a way to “tackle the blank page” of your rough draft.
Tip: Write a few exploratory dialogues with the chatgpt tool first — to get a sense for how it works. Feel free to edit the work. You are not obliged to stick to exactly what the chatgpt spits out. You may cut it down, augment it, etc. The idea is to use the AI dialogue as a “jumping off place” for creative exploration.
You will hand in:
Part 1 – Your original exploratory AI dialogue (rough copy)
AND Part 2 – your final, refined piece of dialogue, where you will be marked on criteria including creativity, characterization, pacing, subtext, and backstory.
Part 3 – include 2-3 AI-generated images that add to your piece (and let us know what prompts you used to create them. For this, you could use generative AI’s such as: DALLE-2, Midjourney, Craiyon (free).
Follow the guidelines of the assignment — and be creative.
