In order to influence policy decisions, a citizen, in your case an informed and involved health care provider, must know the structure and procedures by which policy is determined at all three levels of government: federal, state or local. Much of the reading for this week will be helpful for your final paper in this course.
For that reason, this week’s discussion will focus on the structures of government and the influence of healthcare professional members of government. Select a nurse, other healthcare professional, or another person with a special interest in healthcare, who has been elected or appointed to a governmental position and, using your assigned and selected readings, identify factors within the government and outside that could influence the leader’s effectiveness in influencing health care policy. Factors within the government could include information related to the other members of the level of government in which they serve and their political affiliations and agendas, as well as the processes by which policies are implemented. Factors outside the government might include values of the area the elected official serves and prevalence of certain health issues and other issues.
Make sure that you clearly, but succinctly, provide some information about your selected official and demonstrate understanding of how government works at the level your selected official operates.
