Paper 1 is a 4- to 5-page research article written by use an using the data I provided to the class. The page count does not include the title page or references page.
You will be graded on accuracy, relevance, structure, clarity, and your application of concepts from class. These writing assignments are about the course material, therefore, be sure to properly use the terminology from lecture and your text, when applicable.
Your paper must use APA formatting. Papers should be typed in size 12, Times New Roman or Arial font, and must be double-spaced with one inch margins on all sides. Include a minimum of 5 references in APA format with corresponding in-text citations. References must be from peer-reviewed and empirical reseach articles (such as those we learned to find in our earlier lecture on using EBSCOhost). The paper must be submitted as a word document or pdf uploaded in Canvas before the deadline.
Details for your Method section
- Data were collected by your collaborator (me) using an online survey
- The Survey was available online
- All participants were volunteers from Statistics classes at Los Angeles Valley College
- Participants were given 1-2 points of extra credit as an incentive
- No identifying information was collected from any participant (i.e. they were not asked their name, student ID number, or antying else that would hinder their annonymity)
Additional details about the measure and procedure are available in the two documents (word and excel) in the Paper 1 Module
Double-Check before you Submit
- Be sure your paper is similar in format and length to the example paper in the modules tab (4-5 pages of writing, not including the title and references page).
- Be sure that if your hypothesis is about comparing two groups that you used an independent samples t-test for your results section; if your hypothesis was about the relationship/connection between two quantitative variables, be sure that you used a correlation for your results section
- Be sure you have at least 5 APA-formatted citations in your introduction and discussion section and an APA-formatted references page (see the example paper Download the example paperfor what these should look like)
- References must be from reputable and peer-reviewed sources such as peer-reviewed and empirical journal articles found in EBSCOhost. Blogs, news outlets, wiki-sites, and other resources are not appropriate as sources for Paper 1.
You will need to use the information about the data (in the link below) and how they were collected to write two of your method subsections (measures, and procedures). You will then need to use the data table itself to write the participants subsection of the method and to test your hypothesis (the results from testing the hypothesis go in the Results section of the paper).
You will need to consider any strengths and limitations to the research method and data when writing your discussion section. Note that this is the last part of the paper that should get written after the results are written.
I included the sources that need to be used in files. (ONLY USE THESE SOURCES)
Hypothesis: It is hypothesized that 5 or more hours of exercise in a week will be positively related to happiness.
Test Varables:
Variable in the Paper 1 Data Set you will use for the first variable in your hypothesis: The hours of exercise engaged in today.
Variable in the Paper 1 Data Set you will use for the second variable in your hypothesis: Happiness levels over the last 24 hours.
