I thought it was a nightmare when I started using healthcare information systems. I was terrible with computers but still not superb with them. Everything was a problem; finding ways to chart things was always an issue. Then, once I became a traveler, I went through multiple systems. First, I used Cerner, followed by Meditech, Epic, and Sorian. After learning these new systems quickly, for my last assignment, I went to a facility that used some computerized systems and still did a lot of paper charting. I hated nothing worse than turning away from my computer and having to paper chart. The transition was a struggle, but today, compared to where I was, healthcare information systems are the more accurate way to go. UAD Collat School of Business stated, “The data being stored in healthcare is highly sensitive, stakes of effective technology use are very high improved efficiency and accuracy in healthcare data can save lives (UAB Collat School of Business, n/d).” Effectiveness in the data systems is very important; patients come through the emergency department and are not always in shape to talk. Some are unresponsive, and some are coding. With limited information about a patient, the only thing we can rely on is healthcare records.
