Understanding and using mands and tacts are important parts of the way we engage with the world around us. Engage in the conversation with ONE of the following that resonates with you the most:
- Provide an example of a mand or a tact and explain how it is either a mand or a tact. In your chosen examples of mand and tact, address the roles of the listener and the speaker and how motivation plays a role.
- Discuss which type of verbal operant should be taught first. Explain your thinking.

CLASSMATE 1- Mands are usually the first verbal operant to develop in children because they are immediately reinforced, used to ask for, state, or demand what they want or need, and directly benefit the child making the request. The more natural the mands are, the easier they can transfer into a tact.Mand example: Child sees an appleThe child says: “Apple.”Child gets applehttps://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-verbal-operant…JESSICA LEICHTWEISZ – Nov 09, 2019C
CLASSMATE 2:I think manding should be taught first. I feel as though a lot of challenging behaviors during early interventions occure becasue the child does not have the ability to communicate and mands are crucial for communication. Mands have natural occurring MOs and have immediate natural reinforcement by providing the item or activity they manded for!
CLASSMATE #3 Discuss which type of verbal operant should be taught first. Explain your thinking. The verbal operant that should be taught first is MANDING. Manding is an verbal operant that is controlled by and provides immediate benefit to the speaker. It was the first verbal operant taught in ABA program that utilizes Skinners conceptual analysis to verbal behavior.
CLASSMATE 4:For this week’s discussion I decided to describe a goal for demands because we tend to work on on this goal very early to ensure the learner can communicate their needs with all caregivers. We start with a simple goal such as the Learner will be able to mand for specific items by saying ” I want Item” or “Item Please” across 5 consecutive sessions with 80% accuracy.
A real life example of this would be when you are at a session and the client wants a cookie. The therapist will assist the learner by using least to most prompt method if needed. Examples include saying “What do you want” “Say I want Cookie” or “CookiePlease”
