This module’s discussion centers on the presentation “Career Counseling with Children.” View the presentation and select 1 topic below to respond to.
- Interview an elementary school student about his/her career development (It is important that you do not reveal the child’s name). Ask this student:
- What occupations does she/he think are possible for him/her.
- What occupations he/she thinks may not be possible.
- What occupation he/she would choose if he/she could choose anything.
- What she/he thinks is attractive about the occupation. From the interview, what stands out to you about children and career development? Does anything you learn remind you of particular career development theories? How?
- Reflect on your own career development when you were in elementary and middle school. Looking back, answer the following questions:
- What types of occupations did you think were possible for you?
- Were there occupations that you felt were not be possible for you to pursue?
- How did family, societal, and your career self-concept influence your perceptions of potential and unacceptable occupations?
- Thinking back on your own pre-high school career development, are there career development interventions that would have been helpful to you?
For each thread, students must support their assertions with at least 1 biblical principle.
