The week’s session covered a comprehensive body of new knowledge about endocrine disorders, emphasizing the impact of thyroid dysfunction and the glycemic impact and effects of corticosteroid therapy in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The crucial point I learned during the session was the value of carrying out thorough screening for thyroid problems, even for people who have no symptoms yet, as timely diagnosis and intervention in the case of Hashimoto’s disease can be life-saving. Moreover, awareness of the effects of steroids on glucose balance has become clear in addition to mastering control of blood sugar, which frequently involves both constant monitoring and making tailored treatment changes, as illustrated by the cases where corticosteroid therapy led to hyperglycemia (Sosale et al., 2021). I also learned how active patient education is a key concept whereby doctors and caregivers are charged with leaving patients sufficiently knowledgeable about their illnesses, treatments, and expected side effects to promote informed decision-making and treatment compliance.
