Please answer the following application starters (both module questions are required) and be honest and thorough in your application, writing about 150-200 words PER question. Paraphrase and cite at least 4 different concepts from required course materials in total to support your application paper (2 concepts from module 5, and 2 concepts from module 6).
QUESTION 1 Module 5:
As you’ve learned in Module 5, Goffman builds from Cooley’s looking-glass self on impression management. Goffman breaks down how we manage impressions of others to appear favorable to them (based on the context of the situation).
Imagine that in a few hours from now, you are going in for an interview with the hiring manager for a job that you really want to get. Or, you can analyze a previous interview that you’ve had.
Using Goffman’s terminology, discuss the components of impression management that you utilize in that room with the manager. Break down what you do in the back region before you arrive on the front stage. When does that backstage end and the front stage begin? What is the setting, what props do you envision using, and what is the mood? How will you manage the impression of the hiring manager and what happens if you perceive the “wrong” reaction from them on a question they ask (what corrective practices might be needed)? What makes a “successful” impression management? Feel free to discuss how emotion management plays a role as well if you’d like.
QUESTION 2 Module 6:
Think of a breaching experiment that you could do (you do not need to actually do it for this assignment). What would you do and how would this test a social norm? What does it tell you about reality (you may find the 5 features helpful in your explanation)? How would you feel about doing the experiment and what does this tell you about how the status quo is maintained or changed? Additionally, when it comes to the production of reality, how might self-fulfilling prophecies link to how we frame experiences and our reality in society?
