The Hmong-American community, originating from Southeast Asia, is an underserved group within the United States (U.S.) Despite their rich cultural heritage and historical ties, their presence might not be immediately apparent in a windshield survey. In regions where they are concentrated, signs of their community, such as Hmong New Year celebrations, traditional textile markets, and grocery stores, can be more observable. However, these indicators don’t fully capture the community’s depth or address their challenges, including healthcare, education, and economic barriers. The Hmong community experiences higher poverty rates, with 17% living below the poverty line compared to 13% of all Americans and 10% of all Asians (Budiman, 2023). Furthermore, the director of the Catawba County Library duly acknowledged the underrepresentation of the Hmong community in its local history, noting the minimal number of artifacts at the history museum despite the area having the fourth-largest Hmong immigrant population in the U.S. (National Association of Counties, 2022). This highlights the need for deeper engagement to understand and support the Hmong-American community effectively.
